Mobile Safety

A report on the BBC website explains how malware, malicious apps and spam messages are increasing on mobile devices meaning that users are in danger of having money taken or personal details supplied via illegitimate SMS messages and mobile applications.

In order to minimise these events it is important to follow these basic rules

  • Stick to official marketplaces and app stores
  • Be suspicious of offers that look too good to be true
  • Check your bill for rogue charges
  • Be wary of sites offering for free apps that cost money elsewhere
  • Do not open text messages or click on their containing links if you are not sure of their origin.

Downloading good quality applications

As with looking for information on the web it’s important to remember that the quality of information available via mobile applications can vary a great deal.

When choosing which apps to download, especially when dealing with health information, it is therefore important to consider the legitimacy and the accuracy of the information you will be accessing.

To help you do this, follow the same basic rules to help ensure you are accessing good quality information

  • Stick to official marketplaces and app stores
  • Be wary of sites offering for free apps that cost money elsewhere
  • Be suspicious of offers that look too good to be true

Before you download an app you might be interested in please consider

  • Who wrote the app? (Is it from a recognised organisation you have heard of?)
  • What do the reviews say? (These give a good indication of what other people thought of the app)
  • Have many people downloaded it before you?
  • Looking at trusted organisation websites – they increasingly have a mobile web and app site that will guide you towards legitimate resources
  • Visiting review sites such as http://www.imedicalapps.com/ who test and review medical related mobile apps to see which ones are good and which ones are not worth the memory space.

We have put together these mobile resources pages in order to help point you towards useful apps and other mobile resources are. Search or browse the main pages for information on good quality apps available to you.  Please do let us know if there are good (or bad apps) out there that you think should be included on our list.
